Forget beach weddings or even a big fat Indian one—these days it seems like anyone can get married in space if they have the cash to burn. A company called Space Perspective is selling a trip for couples to the edge of space so they can say “I do” in heavenly surroundings with unparalleled views of our beautiful planet. The waitlist for this otherworldly adventure is already light-years long.
While Ekaterina Dmitriev may have been the first person to marry a loved one in outer space, this startup wants you to be the second. It’s offering couples the chance to have their own spaceflight wedding on its Neptune spacecraft that can take them to 100,000 feet above Earth, the point where the curvature of the planet becomes visible. It’s a six-hour journey that can include a ceremonial meal and plenty of photo opportunities.
Space Perspective, founded by two former crew members of Biosphere 2, the Earth system research facility in Arizona, is offering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at a cost that starts at $125,000 per seat. This will get you a spot aboard the spacecraft that is capable of carrying eight passengers and a pilot. This includes a private cabin for the couple with enormous windows, described as being “the biggest ever flown into space” and boasting hyper-resistant material and an anti-UV coating.
The Neptune will also be stocked with a fully-stocked bar for sky-high toasts and a private bathroom to ensure the happy couple’s special day goes off without a hitch. The interior is also designed for comfort, with everything from an opulent dining table to plush seating so no one will be distracted by discomfort. Sensors and screens provide in-depth science data so guests can get in the groove of their spaceflight, too. The furniture is modular so it can be rearranged to accommodate your special event, whether that’s a dinner for two or a wedding.
If you’re not quite ready to shell out that much money, you can still join the waitlist for this out-of-this-world marriage experience on the company’s website. They’re taking reservations for late 2024, though you’ll have to be prepared to put a down payment of at least $250K.
The price tag is a bit steep, but you’ll have your choice of heavenly scenery to choose from and the satisfaction of being one of the first to get hitched in space. You’ll have to be patient, however, as the company isn’t expected to begin operations until the spring of 2024 at the earliest. In the meantime, you can practice your wedding vows in a nearby park or on the back of a space shuttle. Just don’t forget your helmets.
