Planning a Space Wedding

Whether you’re an avid fan of all things space or simply looking for a unique, offbeat wedding venue, a space wedding could be your dream come true. Many couples are choosing to marry outside traditional venues and are converting everything from a barn, horse stable, riverbank or mountaintop into one-of-a-kind settings. For those of you dreaming big, here are some tips on planning your very own space wedding.

Unlike a wedding at a dedicated event space, raw spaces tend to be very bare bones when it comes to amenities and must-haves. This means that you’ll need to bring in your own tables, chairs, flatware, glassware and china. This is a DIY bride’s dream but it can quickly become overwhelming if delegating isn’t your strength.

It can also be cost prohibitive for those on a tight budget. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of a raw space venue before making a final decision. If you decide that this is the best fit for your vision it’s a good idea to hire an experienced planner who can help you pull all the elements together.

For those with a more limited budget, renting an event space that caters exclusively to weddings can be a much better option. These venues often include bathrooms, kitchens and even a wedding coordinator as part of the rental fee. It’s a great way to take some of the guesswork out of planning and save time as well as money by eliminating the need to search for vendors that can provide the necessary services.

In the case of Yuri Malenchenko, a Russian cosmonaut who married Ekaterina in space, NASA agreed to handle the ceremony remotely from Houston. They set up a video conference with the International Space Station (ISS), which was classified as a private family conference and was not broadcast to the public.

Yuri’s marriage to Ekaterina was a bold move, as it violated the contracts that all cosmonauts must sign before going on space missions. Despite this, the couple went on to have two more children and are still happily married today.

The key to planning your perfect space wedding is to remember that no matter what your plans are there is always a way to make them a reality within your budget. Start by discussing your priorities with your partner and making sure that the space you’re thinking about matches up with your vision. Are stunning photos at the top of your list or do you want to treat everyone to a fabulous sit-down dinner and dance? Once you have your priorities in mind it’s easier to find ways to make them a reality.
