The First Space Wedding

When it comes to weddings, there are a lot of things that couples do to make their special day unforgettable and unique. Whether it’s a big church ceremony or a lavish cruise, there are countless ways for brides and grooms to show their love and create a beautiful event. But one company has gone above and beyond by allowing couples to say their vows in space.

According to the company, Space Perspective will send couples into orbit in a carbon-neutral balloon called Neptune. Those on the waitlist will be able to experience what the company calls the quintessential astronaut experience, including two hours of staring down at Earth from 100,000 feet in the air. The Neptune has what the company describes as “the largest windows flown into space” and is constructed with a hyper-resistant material.

The first couple to tie the knot in space did so by following Texas law, which allows proxy marriage ceremonies when one of the parties is not present. The groom, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, was on the International Space Station (ISS) while his bride, a Russian flight surgeon, was at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The couple marched down the aisle to a David Bowie song via a video linkup between the ISS and their wedding hall in Yaroslavl, Russia, according to MSNBC.

Unlike a traditional wedding venue, which typically starts from scratch when it comes to decorating, a space wedding will have a number of pre-existing decorations. The walls will be decorated, the lighting fixtures already installed, and basic wedding rental items like tables, chairs, and linens are likely to be on hand as well.

However, the biggest challenge when planning a space wedding will probably be making a large space feel cozy and intimate. That’s where a professional wedding planner can come in handy. “There are a lot of fun and creative ways to do this,” Charleston wedding planner Samantha Wiley tells The Cool Down. One of her favorite tricks is draping the ceiling. “By lowering the line of sight, it helps to make the room feel more intimate.”

If you’re planning on getting married in an out-of-this-world venue, don’t be afraid to go big! The right planner can help you find the perfect solution for any space, no matter how big or small.
