Celebrating Your Love on the Edge of Space

A space wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime dream for many couples, and as commercial space travel becomes more viable, the prospect of getting married on the edge of space is closer than ever before. While there are still many hurdles to overcome, including the duration of space flights, movement in microgravity, and strict attire regulations, it is possible for adventurous couples to celebrate their love in outer space.

Currently, there are two companies that offer the opportunity to experience an out-of-this-world celebration in space. Space Perspective is one of them, offering a space shuttle-like capsule called the Space Lounge that can hold up to nine passengers for a wedding or other special event. The Space Lounge is also equipped with a bathroom, drinks, and comfortable seats to take in the view.

The company also provides a wedding planner to assist with navigating the challenges of planning an event in space, including the short duration of space trips and the difficulties of moving around in microgravity. The wedding planner can also recommend photographers and videographers to capture the day.

While a space wedding is certainly an out-of-this world experience, it can be difficult to make legal arrangements from the International Space Station (ISS). One precedent for this was established 16 years ago when cosmonaut Ekaterina Dmitrieva married her new husband Yuri Malenchenko while he was orbiting the ISS. Dmitrieva walked down the aisle via video link to a David Bowie song, and she and her new husband celebrated their wedding with guests back on Earth once the ISS reemerged into sunlight.

A key consideration for couples wishing to celebrate their wedding on the edge of space is that most commercial space travel requires them to wear pressurized flight suits for safety reasons, which limits traditional bridal apparel. However, some companies, such as Space Perspective, allow passengers to choose from lightweight dresses, futuristic suits, or personalized accessories like embroidered patches or a floating veil.

If a full spaceflight isn’t in the cards, a zero-gravity elopement on Earth may be more feasible for some. Parabolic flights, such as the ones offered by Zero Gravity Corporation, create short bursts of weightlessness and can be the perfect setting for a wedding or other special occasion.

Choosing the right venue for your space wedding can be just as important as finding an officiant to conduct the ceremony. A venue that is too big can overwhelm the experience, while a space too small can leave your guests feeling cramped and uncomfortable. A venue that can be customized to fit your vision will be a great choice for creating a truly memorable occasion.

If you’re looking for a unique and out-of-this-world venue for your space wedding, check out our list of venues that specialize in hosting parties. These venues are not your traditional hotel or banquet facility and come bare bones—meaning all of the tables, chairs, flatware, glassware, china, etc. must be brought in by the couple, which can add up quickly if you’re not careful!
